THE UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT HAS BEEN SIGNED BY 33 PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION OF TURKEY. 

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), in which ten basic principles in the fields of human rights, employee rights, the environment and combating corruption for the purpose of reaching a better position on a global scale are published to invite the private sector, work force, nongovernmental organizations and official authorities to continue their operations in light of these principles was signed under the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Turkey by 33 pharmaceutical companies in Turkey.

The Compact, which has previously only been signed on a company basis in the world, has the distinction of being a first in the sectorel application started by the UNGC Turkey National Network with large scale attendance and acceptance by the pharmaceutical sector.

In addition to the representatives of companies that had signed The Global Compact, TISK Chairman Tuğrul Kudatgobilik, UNGC Turkey Representative Dr. Yılmaz Argüden and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Turkey Chairman Nezih Barut were also in attendance at the press meeting held on Monday May 24.

TISK Chairman Tuğrul Kudatgobilik had the following to say on the subject: “Our Confederation has played an important and active role in the introduction, popularization and application of the Global Compact in our country since the very beginning and firmly intends to continue being active. It is a great source of pride that 33 companies from the pharmaceutical sector have come together today to sign the Global Compact under the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Turkey. This kind of sectorel participation and the signature ceremony have the distinction of being a first which will set an example for the world”.

UNGC Turkey Representative Dr. Yılmaz Argüden added the following in his speech: “Turkey is not only setting good examples with peaceful initiatives and European quality awards but also by serving as a leader to the world in innovative approaches to social responsibility projects. In this world which is getting smaller while mutual loyalties increase each establishment is required to carry out its individual, community and global responsibilities. Turkey, which is among the leader countries of the UNGC, has gained new speed for the world’s most important voluntary enterprise, UNGC, with the innovative sectorel approach which we have started. Today I congratulate the pharmaceutical companies that are in attendance and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Turkey for being a voluntary part of this pioneering enterprise.”

Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Assocaiton of Turkey Chairman Nezih Barut said that they were proud, as the IEIS and the 33 companies from the pharmaceutical sector, to accept the 10 universal principles which indicate the goals that communities want to reach. Nezih Barut also added, “These principles in the scope of the UNGC correspond exactly to the values of the pharmaceutical industry which has a universal governance approach. Our goal is to solidify these values with different suggestions, expand areas of application and share them with suppliers, employees and customers in order to popularize them. Our goal as the pharmaceutical industry is to raise the bar”.
