PRESS RELEASE
"To support the generic drugs will result in savings for the public finances and increase the export "
By stating that the industy remained below its potential for many years because of the lack of stability related to the political and economic environment as well as the pharmaceutical industry related issues in our country, Bülent Eczacıbaşı who spoke at the Generic Drugs panel, said that "By the generic drug use and the promotion of its production, Turkey has reached opportunity of treatment with inexpensive drugs on one hand, on the other hand, it will become a country that exports more products to the developed markets such as the US and EU”.
"Generic Drug Industry in the EU and Turkey" panel, that is help by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Turkey (İEİS) in Ankara, the impact of the generic drugs on the national economy has been discussed by the of domestic and foreign experts. The Minister of Labour and Social Security Murat Başesgioğlu and the Minister of Health Professor. Dr. Recep Akdag, have also attended the panel.
In his speech at the panel openning, the İEİS President Bülent Eczacıbaşı, said that the expenses of the public health will decrease with the support of the generic drugs and the development of the national pharmaceutical industry which is an arm of our industry that is strategically important will be encouraged.
Eczacıbaşı highlighted the following views in his speech:
"Today, the public and private institutes and organizations that are aiming to reduce the drug costs are expensive countries prefer the generic products for the conventional treatments in order to raise funds for expensive novel treatments are preferred products equivalent to conventional treatments. In many countries, the support for generic drugs is becoming a state policy. Also in our country, the possitive contribution of the generic drugs to the public finance is only possible by effective licensing and the immediate admission to the reimbursement without any delay.
Turkish production standards, has a very advanced pharmaceutical industry in terms of its technology and its capacity. Our industry, in 2004, had exported pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical raw material to 70 countries, including the developed westernized countries. However, the volume of our exports is far below its capacity. Turkey will be able to become a country that exports generic drugs such as its precedents like India, Israel, South Korea".
The Director of the European Generic Drug Association Greg Perry who attended the panel as a speaker, explained the development of the generic pharmaceutical industry in Europe and the governmental policies supporting the generic drugs to reduce the health care expenses. In the panel, while the president of the Portugal Institute of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals Rui Santos Ivo explained the stimulus models for the generic drugs by the authorities, the president of the Association of Polish Pharmaceutical Union Cezary Sledziewski provided information on efforts by Poland -that recently joined the EU, of protecting the national generic pharmaceutical industry during the negotiations.
